December 20, 2016 Nanjing and Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum

Time change is getting me, up at 4:30 am.  Today we visited the Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum, one of the places we took Diana in 1997, before flying to Hong Kong.  Although overcast, we enjoyed walking up the 296 steps to the top of the mausoleum.  Back in 1997 we could walk into the area where the tomb was, but you can no longer enter that area.  We took our “remake” photo and headed to the airport. (see on Facebook)
We flew to Hong Kong, where we are staying in the same hotel we stayed in almost 20 years ago, The Harbor Grand Kowloon.  We have a lovely room on the 19th floor with amazing harbor views.  We walked up to the roof top pool to enjoy the city lights before having dinner.
As a refresher, our whole adoption group was flying home, but it was our anniversary, and we had never been to Hong Kong, so we decided to spend 2 days there before flying home.  It was June 29th, and on July 1 Hong Kong was being handed back over to China.  The adoption agency wanted us all out of the country on July 1 given the uncertainty of the situation. All the hotels were full because EVERYONE was coming to Hong Kong for the celebrations.  A friend who was a travel agent found a room for us, it was a little expensive but we didn’t care.  Well it turned out that we were on the concierge floor in the same hotel the leader of China and the Chinese delegation were staying.  We think they blocked too many rooms and let them go at the last minute.  Everything was decorated with red flowers, banners, walkways etc.  The hotel is right on the water with amazing views and a rooftop pool. We had such fond memories of that hotel that we really wanted Diana to return there with us.
Since it is almost Christmas, the hotel is also decorated in red with Poinsettias, banners, and other Holiday decorations.  We were exhausted so had room service and are heading to bed.

Still no luggage for me…….
